Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account yet?

Not yet. We're forming and aren't authorised to take deposits. Register your interest and we'll tell you as soon as we can open accounts.

How much does it cost to join?

£10. When we open, you'll pay £10 to become a member. This buys your membership share, which makes you a part-owner with one vote.

We're not taking any money yet. We will never ask you to pay before we're authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority.

What will my member number look like?

When you join, you'll get a unique member number made of the date you joined followed by your member number. For example, 20271015-0001 means you joined on 15 October 2027 and were our first member.

It never includes your date of birth or other personal details, so it's safe to use on letters and when you log in.

What ID will I need to join?

When you become a member, you'll need three things: one form of photo ID (such as a passport or driving licence), one proof of address dated within the last 3 months (such as a utility bill, bank statement or council tax bill), and a photo of you holding your photo ID next to your face. You can upload them online or bring your documents to our branch.

You only do this once. We keep your documents securely on file, so you won't need to show them again when you open a savings account or apply for a loan. We'll only ask again if your details change, or if the law requires us to update our records.

Will I be questioned about withdrawing my own money?

We'll make taking your money out as simple and respectful as the law allows. Like every UK bank, building society and credit union, we must follow anti-money-laundering rules.

That means very large cash withdrawals may need some notice or a quick check. When that happens, we'll explain why and keep it short. You're an owner here, not a suspect.

Will I get a bank account with a debit card?

Yes. We plan to offer a basic everyday account with a contactless Visa debit card. You'll be able to get your wages or benefits paid in, set up direct debits, pay by card and take cash out.

There's no overdraft, and you won't need a good credit score to open one. Any fees will be clearly shown before you sign up.

Is my money safe in a credit union?

UK credit unions are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Once we're authorised, eligible savings will be protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per person.

What's the difference between a credit union and a bank?

A bank is usually owned by shareholders and run to make them a profit. A credit union is owned by its members, each with one vote, and any surplus goes back to them.

Who can join?

Anyone who lives or works in Birmingham. Parents and guardians will also be able to open savings accounts for children.

Where will the branch be?

Our first branch will be in Birmingham city centre. We'll confirm the address once we've secured premises. You can explore a 3D concept of how it could look.

What products will you offer?

We plan to start with an everyday account with a debit card, savings accounts and affordable personal loans. Members will help decide what we offer next. See what we plan to offer.

How can I help get it started?

Pledge to join, volunteer, or put yourself forward as a founding director. See Get involved.
